What is your name?
What is your position and how long have you worked with Versatile?
Eric Voss: I am the Shop Manager, and have worked with Versatile for 8.5 years. I started with Versatile Sash.
How long have you been building custom wood products?
Eric Voss: 35 years
How and why did you start woodworking?
I’ve always enjoyed woodworking so when the opportunity to take an apprenticeship that would send me to college came up, I took it.
What is the most memorable project you’ve worked on with Versatile, and why?
The Heceta Head Lighthouse entry door. There were 165 components in the door and frame and I had 5 shop guys working on the project. The end result had zero errors.
What was the most challenging project you’ve worked on with Versatile, and why?
The oval pivot window we created for a residence. There were a lot of components and it was difficult to maintain accuracy as some of the joints had to be hand cut.
What is your favorite wood species to work with, and why?
Mahogany or sapele – they are easy to work with, machine well and look great when stained or finished with a clear coat.
What are your interests/hobbies outside of work?
Aside from working at home, I build puzzles. I’m currently working on a 18,000 piece puzzle – 4 landscape photos of 4,500 pieces each. It’s 9ft by 6ft.
